In this page you can see the interaction of cloth fibers with water. The images were obtained by the Philips ESEM XL 30 TMP W scanning electron microscope. The relative humidity inside the analysis chamber was raised up to 100 %, to produce water condensation on the fabric surface. The small white line on the right of the first image indicates a 20 microns length (0.02 mm) and is linked to magnification. This image shows cotton fibers. To buy a 300 dpi image.

The second image shows a synthetic fiber twist of a cloth fabric. This kind of examination by ESEM allows studying the wettability, the effectiveness of treatments performed to change wettability and the microstructural behaviour of fibers when they come into contact with water. In fact, fabrics designed to be in contact with the human body must have special transpiration and wettability properties. The small white line on the right of the first image indicates a 100 microns length (0.1 mm).
