Here is an image of a high density polyethylene fracture. The image was obtained with the ESEM XL30 TMP Philips Electron Microscope. The small marker at the right bottom of the image represents a length of 50 µm (0.05 mm). This is the image of a "craze". A craze is a planar defect similar to a crack. It contains an interpenetrating network of voids among highly drawn polymer fibrils bridging the craze faces. In this case, the bridges fractured completely.
