Here you can see an image of the bio-corroded section of a carbon steel plate. The image was obtained in high vacuum into the analysis chamber of the ESEM XL30 TMP Philips Electron Microscope. The corrosion product is brown. Bacteria produce tubercles and, under the tubercles a small hole. Bacteria collect inside the holes and produce FeS. Biological corrosion is important also for copper and aluminium alloys. The small marker at the right bottom of the image represents a length of 20 microns (0.02 mm).To buy a 300 dpi image.
